Transnistria (Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, or PMR) is a state in eastern Europe that is unrecognised by any other state. After the dissolution of the USSR, it broke away from Moldova in a struggle that escalated into military conflict only ended by Russian intervention. However the status of the breakaway state remains unresolved. Under international law, it is still considered part of Moldova and in Europe, it is assumed to be under the control of Russia. This film follows the PMR’s 2011 presidential elections. The charismatic incumbent, Igor Smirnov, had held the office for 20 years and appeared confident of another victory. But the opposition mounted a strong campaign with its vision of the PMR’s future. The presidential campaign seemed to be, above all, an emotional one. In the end, Smirnov ended up in third place and reform-minded Yevgeny Shevchuk became president. In 2014, Transnistria asked to join the Russian Federation.
