Per is not the father he wants to be. For 30 years – most of his life – he was addicted to drugs and alcohol. Social workers took his daughter away to live in foster care. Meanwhile, Per has been clean and sober for the last 7 years, and Ilse, now eight years-old, visits him frequently at his apartment, where Per keeps his sizable film collection. He meets with other men and talks about his problems and wishes in a support group for single fathers run by Torben, a social worker. His greatest dream is to put his broken family back together again. Ilse’s mother, Christina, was also lost to drugs for a long time, and she hasn’t seen Ilse since the girl was 6 months old. Despite being advised against the idea, Per is anxious to set up a surprise reunion for Ilse. Torben has given Per the assignment to document his experiences as a father with a video camera.
