Following a stay in the USA, young priest Aimo returns to his home. Vallila is a tranquil neighbourhood in Helsinki, characterized by traditional wooden homes. But the old structures are slated to be torn down to make room for modern concrete housing blocks. Aimo finds a position as a marriage counsellor although he has no experience whatsoever with romantic relationships. Soon the women’s interest begins to focus primarily on him. Since he can’t say no, Aimo takes the side of both the pro and con modernization factions, causing all sorts of confusion. Risto Jarva’s second-to-last film played at the NFL in 1976. In 2002, Vallila was also a featured location in Aki Kaurismäki’s “The Man Without a Past”. Although the demolition of the historic houses did not in fact take place, the neighbourhood is currently under evaluation.
