Calling Olavi a rogue would be an understatement. There’s not a woman around whom the farmer’s son hasn’t seduced and then abandoned. Leaving the farm to try his luck as a logging rafter after an argument with his strict father, he meets up with even more amorous adventures. But then he falls in love with Kyllikki, who gives him the cold shoulder. He’s finally able to win her over with a breakneck raft journey through the river rapids. Yet between them stands Kyllikki’s father and Olavi’s ignominious past, which has finally caught up with him. This, Tulio’s earliest surviving film, is an adaptation of the novel by the same name by Johannes Linnankoski. Unafraid of pathos and employing expressionistic landscape shots to enrich his film, Tulio devotes himself to the contradictions of human nature.
