In 2008, the financial crisis hit Iceland with full force. The country’s banking system came to a screeching halt; there was even sudden talk of national bankruptcy. The consequences of a failed system were nowhere as visible as here. How could it have come to this? This film shows three people in Reykjavík two years earlier. A single mother can no longer get by on her salary as a kindergarten teacher, and works nights as a call girl. Following his divorce and the death of his daughter, a once-successful author succumbs completely to alcohol. A former footballer tries a career as a banker, and is pulled into a vortex of morally questionable financial operations. These episodes, skilfully woven together around the three figures, present an oppressive portrait of Icelandic society shortly before its collapse.
