Pirita is a foundling whose mother died after being chased by wolves across the snow plains of Lapland. Raised by reindeer breeders, the pretty young girl has countless admirers. She chooses Aslak, the only one capable of beating her in a sleigh race. But married life proves to be sombre. In order to obtain a love potion for her stressed husband, Pirita seeks out a shaman who takes her for a witch. Driven by an unquenched thirst for love, Pirita henceforth preys on men on the snowy plains, drinking their blood after turning into a white reindeer: “A lot goes on here, that southerners don’t understand.” This legendary Finnish film about an animalistic female vampire is a hot-blooded snow melodrama that revels in depicting a fear of untamed female sexuality by means of fantastic nature images. - A remake based on the original script is currently in production.
