Folk ved fjorden

Folk ved fjordenDie Menschen am Fjord / The People by the Fjord

Competition Documentaries, Norway 2011, 61 Min.

Ole Hjlemas is a dairy farmer. He took over his father's farm on the fjord's steep slopes in 1958, aged 17. In the wintertime he helps the cows when they calve, in the springtime he disperses dung on the pastures with a pitchfork, as the slopes are too steep for a tractor. He keeps the paths in the forest clear with a chainsaw that he once got as a birthday present. His neighbour Magnhild Dyrdal is the only person to still grow potatos here. She owns sheep and goats and is known for her excellent sausages. Magnhild looks after her mother, who suffered a stroke. She was never married. When she needs firewood, she goes into the forest and cuts it herself. The film tells of busy days, of demanding daily work. Such a traditional way of life guarantees a broken back ... Øyvind Sandberg accompanied his two protagonists throughout the greater part of a year, attentively registering their everyday lives as well as the seasonal changes in their natural environment.
