According to Vaclav Havel, it was “jeans and rock music” that brought about the end of the Soviet Union. This quote by the idol of the Czech “Velvet Revolution” is particularly significant in the case of Lithuania, where the path to independence was taken in a “Singing Revolution”, as was the case in various Baltic States. Its originators include the rock band “Antis” and its founding member Algirdas Kauspedas, an architect from Kaunas. Conceived in 1984 as a “new year's amusement”, “Antis” soon mad a name for themselves: Making use of rock music, fantasy uniforms and theatre make up, they presented a rousing travesty show that subtly made fun of state officials and rituals. Entitled “rock marches”, communist youth festivals and cultural events soon developed into perestroika inititiatives, which “Antis” joined in with. The film combines interviews, countless excerpts from concerts and early music videos in its recollection of this wild, creative and revolutionary Lithuanian era.
