February 1933: Torgny Segerstedt is the chief editor of a Gothenburg newspaper when Hitler comes to power in Germany. The educated religious historian immediately publishes a critical piece against the Nazi leader. Göring reacts with a warning telegram to Maja Forssman, Segerstedt's publisher. But she, too, hates Hitler, and loves Torgny Segerstedt, with whom she has an affair - although both of them are married. Torgny's wife Puste doesn't stand a chance against the attractive and influential Maja. Axel, publisher and Maja's husband, also knows about the affair. While Nazi Germany is occupying ever more countries, the journalist keeps writing against Hitler. The political elite becomes agitated as it fears over Sweden risking its neutrality in WWII. King Gustav V. of Sweden summons Segerstadt, but the latter continues to resist: after all, he is writing against evil and will not be silenced - neither by the king nor by politicians.
