Vuosaari

VuosaariLiebe auf Finnisch / Naked Harbour

Competition Narrative Films, Finland / Germany / Russia / Austria 2011, 123 Min.

Wintertime in Vuosaari, a satellite town in East Helsinki. People of all backgrounds and classes come together: a lonely American businessman; a married couple that has drifted apart; a junkie couple with financial and other worries; a mother with cancer and her daughter; a latchkey child that only feels for its dog; a boy who cannot come to terms with his Estonian mother's lover; a father intent on toughening himself and his son; and a young girl willing to do anything to become famous, literally anything ... Aku Louhimies calls his film “a collection of 'cruel’ love stories”. Its structure is reminiscent of Robert Altmann's “Short Cuts”. Louhimies casts an unrelenting glance on Finnish states of affair, as he did previously in “Frozen Land” (NFL 2005), evoking an atmosphere of solitude, social indifference and latent violence - but not entirely without hope.
