A small village in the south of China, far away from modern progress: Kwok Yun is in her late thirties and unmarried. Although she complies with village traditions, she has a rather unfulfilling, dismal affair with the married village teacher. One day the simple worker believes she sees a giant silver thing in the sky. She senses a powerful force take control of her before she loses consciousness. When she wakes up, there is a wounded stranger lying beside her. The American is the first "Westerner" Kwok Yun has ever met. She brings him to her house and cleans his wounds, but suddenly he disappears. Kwok Yun reports the matter to the Chang, the village principal, and triggers an unexpected chain reaction. Government officials begin questioning the clueless villagers. At the same time "Chief" Chang senses a unique opportunity to propel her village into the 21st century. Aided by the millionaire Bill Huang, she builds tourist attractions all around the "UFO landing strip". Kwok Yun is increasingly sucked into a maelstrom of absurd events.
