Retrospective, Sweden 2007, 58 Min., English subtitles
"My movie is a yoik!" says Liselotte Wajstedt: a Sami song. She is into her thirties when she learns that her mother is a Sami. Because her mother had not wanted her to live through the degradation of being called a "Lappish bastard", she never mentioned their family origins. But now the daughter travels north to discover her family's roots and explore a culture that has previously been unfamiliar to her. It is to be a trip full of obstacles. On her route to Kautokeino, Liselotte Wajstedt meets reindeer breeders and learns of the Sami people's political demands. She has a traditional kolt tailored for herself and gets involved in heated debates. She visits places of sacrifice and festivals, speaks to young musicians and old women. Liselotte Wajstedt is a modern urbanite, and not often does she find it easy to understand Sami culture - despite having attended a language course! Her entertaining "road movie" is amusing and full of self-irony, multi-faceted and imaginatively construed with diary-style camera notes, augmented by drawings she made on the trip.
