Competition Documentaries, Sweden 2011, 93 Min.
Director Peter Gerdehag has accompanied a near-extinct Swedish cultural tradition with his camera throughout three years: the work of the "cow women" Inger and Britt in the Swedish province of Halland. For decades the two of them have been milking their seven cows by hand and selling the milk to the Arla dairy company, which regularly collects the hand-milked milk with a large road tanker. Fourty-year-old private images, interviews and everyday observations make this exceptional documentary a meditative, fascinating portrait of two people who live in symbiotic harmony with the land and the animals around them. Furthermore, "Women with Cows" also reflects the changing means of production of the modern consumer goods industry, in which valuable traditions like the "cow women" have no chance of survival.
