Competition Documentaries, Denmark 2010, 58 Min., English subtitles
The Danish comic artist Jakob Boeskov decides to change his profession and invents a new identity: Now known as "Henrik Höfgren", a name taken from Heinrich Mann's novel "Mephisto", he develops an "ID sniper rifle", a high-precision rifle with which microchips can be fired under dissidents' skin, allowing them to be registered and tracked at demonstrations. When Henrik Höfgren introduces his new development at an international arms fair in Katar, he raises much interest amongst transactors working for various unjust states ("Unrechtsstaat"), who offer him multi-million-dollar contracts. Now Henrik Höfgren must fend off the temptations of unscrupulous profit-making. Director Jakob Boeskov plays himself in this breathtaking satire on the corruption of the international arms trade and the unscrupulous willingness of industry, science and politics to believe in progress. "Empire North" was shot entirely on Boeskov's mobile phone, which gives it a hyper-real aesthetic that brings forth its very own immanent beauty.
