Competition Documentaries, Finland 2010, 82 Min., English subtitles
One man speaks of his criminal record and his long jail sentences, another of his trauma over his authoritarian aggressive father. A third bursts into tears when he speaks of his daughter whom he lives apart from, while a fourth man happily demonstrates how he has been massaging his wife's back for the past 51 years. The sauna as such has become something of a confessional in Finland's largely secular society. Which makes it all the more fitting that "Steam of Life" won the Prize of the Interreligious Jury at the documentary film festival in Nyon: “Through the sauna, a lava cornerstone of the Finnish art of living, the co-directors present men who show themselves naked – in every meaning of the word. Rhythmed like a choral song, “Steam of Life” mixes tears and smiles, sorrows and joys, shared emotions, in a spirit of forgiveness, serenity and brotherhood.” When the directors even install a sauna in a phone booth, it provides evidence of a great sense of self-irony. "Steam of Life" was such a great audience success in Finland, that the film is now Finland's Oscar entry!
