Competition Documentaries, Estonia 2010, 77 Min., English subtitles
"His music is like mercury," says conductor Paavo Järvi about Erkki-Sven Tüür, "You can't toch it. It flows from one form to another." Long gone are the days when Tüür's compositions were only performed in Estonia. They have found their way to the stages of several other European countries. The film portrays Tüür's working method, his view of the world and his musical background in seven chapters. In Soviet times, Tüür managed a christian prog-rock band, which re-grouped for the first time for a concert during the film's shooting. But besides progessive popular music such as King Crimson and Frank Zappa, it was Estonia's marine nature that primarily influenced Tüür's serious music. The composer spends much of his time at his holiday home on the Baltic Sea, and what he says about the sea and the sky there can also be said to apply to his musical oeuvre: "In a way, it’s always the same, but at the same time, it’s different every day, every five minutes."
