“I had a wonderful childhood. Mother went to bed early. Father died when I was twelve.” The lapidary beginning of young Adrian’s story, whose mother is depressive and whose father shot himself. And there is another family secret Adrian keeps to himself: He is a hermaphrodite. The boy’s female chromosome makes him an outsider. Although he suffers from it, he puts on an air of inaccessibility and aggression. Only Heidi could prove to become something like a friend: a 15-year old albino girl who lives in the same house as Adrian and seeks his company. But Adrian rebuffs even her, his soulmate – with ultimately fatal consequences. The only comfort Adrian finds is in the school play, where he plays Oedipus, a role he seems born for … Lars Saabye Christensen wrote the furious and “un-adaptable” novel about a non-conformist (gender and otherwise). “Elling” director Petter Næss has now made this ingenious adaptation for the screen: “The Catcher in the Rye” meets “Hallam Foe”
