Janne is a notorious dead-beat. But because his girlfriend Inari is no longer willing to do without TV in the dark season, she throws him off the couch. Janne and two of his friends “borrow” a sports car and drive north to get a new digibox off Inari’s father. “Analogue was better!” is the resume at the end of the film, after the trio has found itself confronted with the hostile forces of nature, the police and other imponderabilities. For instance, Janne must survive an attack by “killer lesbians”, kill a reindeer with his bare hands and serve as a human target for a heavily armed Russian … while back home his “Penelope” is being courted by an old suitor! “Beauty and the Bastard” director Dome Karukoski has made an arctic road-movie, high-paced and full of wit. His “Lapland Odyssey” is a hefty bachelor party that leads through a decidedly un-christmassy polar night.
