PrinsessaHauptrolle Maja / Starring Maja

Competition Narrative Films, Sweden 2009, 94 Min., English subtitles

Prinsessa

18-year-old Maja lives in a little village in provincial Sweden and dreams of becoming an actress. It is her greatest desire to draw all the attention to herself on a stage or before a film camera – so that everyone can acknowledge how beautiful she actually is. Because at first glance, Maja doesn't seem to have much in the way of star-appeal: she is overweight and clumsy. Erika, a journalist, is fascinated by Maja's stubbornness and begins to shoot a documentary about her. And bears witness to a great deal of set-backs and humiliations that Maja must endure on the path to stardom. Already in her debut film "The Ketchup Effect" (NFL 2004) did director Teresa Fabik prove her extraordinary sense for the anguish of outsiders who are exposed in a hostile society. In "Starring Maja" Fabik dissects the cruel mechanisms of the media industry in an extremely comical manner. The 20-year-old Zandra Andersson gives her very impressive screen debut in the role of Maja.
