Retrospective, Denmark 1956, 106 Min.
When teacher Eva Nygaard springs a surprise visit on her fiancé in Greenland, she is not exactly welcome: having grown lonely in Ilulissat, Doctor Erik Halsøe has promised a nurse to wed her. Shifted off to Sermilink by Erik, Eva meets salesman Jens Lauritzen. Jens, a rough-edged loner, familiarizes his visitor with Greenlandic life. She gets to know his housekeeper Naja and her boyfriend Pavia. When Pavia is victimized by his friends for his failure as a hunter, he flees into the mountains to live as a "Qivitoq", an outcast, and the circumstances are subject to such dramatic change that the Eva's life is also profoundly affected. "Qivitoq", the Greenlandic version of a Danish "Heimatfilm" (lit: home film), was nominated as an Academy Award winner for Best Foreign-Language Film and for a Golden Palm in Cannes.
