Competition Documentaries, Finland 2008, 74 Min.
After having five Finns reflecting their job life in "The Smoking Room" (NFL 2007), his documentary film about social zones, director Jukka Kärkkäinen has now sought out six Finns in their private homes. In "The Living Room of the Nation" they share their personal joys and sorrows, traumata and hopes – by simply talking to the camera. This results in sometimes depressing, sometimes surreal and sometimes very funny vignettes. Banalities and dramatics of everyday human existence come to light between built-in cupboards and TV sets, kitchenettes and moose antlers. Kärkkäinen's could well be named "Litanies from the second floor" after Roy Andersson's Swedish film grotesque – were it not Finnish through and through. The jury at the Tampere Film Festival had reached its verdict: "Forget Nokia and the innovation economy! The jury hereby demands that this film must from now on be used as the main tool for building the brand Finland."
