Filmforum Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 2006, 104 Min., German version
Adé, D-Flame and Mamadee met for the first time when the black man Alberto Adriano was beaten to death by three youths in Dessauer Park. More than 20 of Germany’s most famous male Afro-German musicians united to form the band project “Brothers Keepers”, recorded the single “Adriano (Letzte Warnung)” and the album “Lightkultur”, which also featured the female counterpart “Sisters Keepers”. They toured East German schools to speak to kids themselves. The film gives accounts of the protagonists’ individual life stories and the difficulties experienced in developing an Afro-German identity, as well as of the problems of integration into German society. It tells of the power of music and of how good it feels to raise your voice as one. A story of growing up under hardened conditions: shaped by inner conflicts between cultures, by exclusion and by aggression. A film about the long way home.
