Filmforum Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 2007, 87 Min.
Seven men, one woman and a passion for an instrument that hardly anyone knows anymore, although it was played by thousands in the Germany of the 1920s. At that time there existed more than 200 bandoneon orchestras, today there are merely nine. One of them plays in Kiel. Every Thursday mostly old-age pensioners meet in the club of a sports association, sporting their bandoneons on their knees, looking seriously at the sheet music in front of them and playing tango, operettas or ‘Greetings to Kiel’. The film gives an introduction to the functioning of the instrument that thrives off a musical contradiction between melancholy and sharpness, with a history that offers social historic insights.
