Competition Documentaries, Finland 2006, 70 Min., English subtitles
Sudi misses the word ‘mother’ and would like to utter it again some time. But like the other protagonists in this film Sudi must now learn other, strange words. 220 minors came without parents as refugees to Finland in the year 2005. The film concentrates on three of them: Sudi, 12, is from Somalia; the two boys Azim, 17, and Wahid, 16, are refugees from Afghanistan. The film shows their everyday life in a refugee hostel, at school or at work. Simultaneously their applications for political asylum are being checked by the authorities. Their entire future depends on these decisions. Until the decision is made, the lives of most child refugees remain precarious despite good care: “We carry our home inside us”, says Wahid when he must pack his suitcase again. Because not all of the outcomes of the three applications for asylum are as had been hoped for.
