Author Jurga Ivanauskaite, who passed away of cancer this year aged 45 years only, was considered a forerunner in Baltic literature even beyond the boundaries of Latvia. Being a devout Buddhist throughout the last years of her life, her works are marked by an intense examination of the tension between religion, sexuality and emancipation. She was continually faced with hostility in catholic-dominated Latvia, e.g. when her novel “Ragana ir lietus” (1993) appeared, on which a part of this film is based. Its erotic content prevented the novel from being sold in regular bookshops which meant it could only be acquired in erotica shops. And indeed the topic is somewhat volatile: a young woman whose husband is in psychiatric care begins an affair with a catholic priest. When he breaks with her, she turns to a psychotherapist. Animated by her patient’s erotic escapades, she too finds herself a lover.
