Competition Narrative Films, Finland 2007, 100 Min., English subtitles

Miehen työ

Juha is 38, his wife Katja is one year younger, they have three children. Katja suffers from depression and thus Juha does not dare tell her he has lost his job and is now unemployed. Juha is also too proud to tell her, as he firmly believes that a man must provide for his wife and children – or be a loser. Thus he spends his time in a remote café, worried to bits that the truth will come to light. One day a woman hires him to do some maintenance work for her and as soon as he enters her apartment it becomes clear she is expecting “services” of another kind. She pays him very generously, which gives Juha an idea: with the help of his friend, taxi-driver Olli, he begins to earn his living as a callboy. It being a good deed helps Juha cope with his scruples; after all he is doing it for his wife and children. But there comes a point when it is no longer just male honour, but his family that is at stake. Backed by the powerful performances of its actors, the film tells of people whose life plan differs increasingly from the reality of life.
