Kolonien

The past century has seen 500,000 Danes leave their homeland to settle in another country. 5,000 of them founded a colony in Argentina. 50,000 people with Danish ancestors live there today. Their story is told in this extraordinary documentation by Eva Mulvad and Judith Lansdale, about a previously unknown aspect of Danish culture: Danish emigrants and their offspring listen to Danish radio, celebrate the birthday of Queen Margarethe and have pictures of the little mermaid in their bedroom. Even though hardly any of them have ever been to Denmark. “The Colony” fascinates on account of the cultural contrast created by the Latin American backdrop to the Danish way of life. But the intelligently mounted film does not restrict itself to the comical aspects of its topic: the directors demonstrate that Danes in Argentina are doing precisely what immigrants in Denmark are constantly being reproached for: the care of their own imported traditions.
