Competition Documentaries, Sweden 2006, 84 Min., English subtitles
Stig Anders is 59 years old and lives in the company of horses. The eccentric loner lives reclusively on a decrepit old farm in the hills of Småland, ploughing the land with his horses, threshing the corn or clearing the forest nearby. The horses are Stig’s only companions on the former family farm. One day a storm breaks loose which develops into a drama of life and death for Stig and his horses. Director Peter Gerdehag became known as a nature photographer, which is noticeable in this beautiful documentary film: from the perspective of a quiet observer, the camera is dedicated to respectfully approaching the ancient farm life of Stig Anders, capturing the impressive landscape motifs of Småland while doing so. When it was broadcast on Swedish television, “The Horseman” was seen by the enormous figure of 1.6 million viewers. The film was awarded a special prize for visual arrangement at the International Documentary and Anthropology Film Festival in Estonia.
