A woman with heavy make-up sits on a park bench and complains to a heavy metal freak about nobody understanding her. A primary school teacher and a carpet salesman break into tears at their respective workplaces after a marital fight. A family man smashes valuable porcelain at a party and is punished by death on the electric chair. Swedish master director Roy Andersson has designed 50 such ‘tableaux’ for his new film, in an inimitable depiction of the fears and worries of human coexistence. Similar to his most recent film “Songs from the Second Floor” (2000), Andersson’s scenes of everyday life sway between realism and the grotesque, gaining a strong surrealist streak on account of stylized staging and pastel colours. “You, the Living” was much cheered by a specialist audience at the Cannes Film Festival this spring and has been entered as the Swedish application for the Oscars.
