What a discovery! The beginning of the Norwegian silent film “Baldevin’s Wedding” is set in Lübeck - in the harbour at the lower Trave, in a nearby ‘hiring office’ and in the alleys of the old town. Here the ‘heroes’ of this charming comedy about heartbreakers and frauds meet: Baldevin and Simen, two happy-go-lucky seamen who are hire onto a ship in Lübeck and return home. After they get into a fight, Baldevin is put in jail while Simen marries a rich widow. When Baldevin is released, Simen wants to arrange for him to marry accordingly, and has already spied out a possible candidate. Of course, the two women must never find out about their chivalrous men’s past. But the two women carry secrets of their own … In 2006 “Baldevin’s Wedding” was restored at great cost by the Norwegian Film Institute and the National Library by using the original stage manuscript.
