Four spliff-heads, three gangsters, five vegans, four hunters … and a thousand and one reasons to free an elephant. These are the ingredients that Norwegian cartoonist Christopher Nielsen has shaken and stirred into his fast-paced adult animation film. The heroes, or rather, anti-heroes, are four long-time mates working for circus director Stromowski. The star of the show is Jimmy the elephant. All his working life, he has been pumped with uppers and downers to enhance his performance in the ring and to chill him out afterwards. Jimmy has become a junkie. Now Roy Arnie and his three friends have set their sights on Jimmy – as the potential star of their own circus. But Jimmy has other ideas. On his crazy escape attempt across the tundra, he is chased by Roy Arnie, the police, a group of militant vegetarians, a trio of Sami mafiosi and a drunken bevy of Scottish hunters … “Free Jimmy” is a hugely enjoyable, anarchistic romp. Forget Disney – this is Dumbo on drugs.
