Filmforum Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 2006, 84 Min., German subtitles
Winter on Barcelona’s deserted beach. Waves ebb and flow. José, who is almost 90, jogs along the beach. Paulina, a disabled elderly lady, leaves her crutches on the shore as she sings the Cuban boleros of her youth in the icy sea. 80-year-old Antonio sits gazing out to sea from the throne he has built on the pier. The characters in this film are nearing the end of their lives. They belong to an ageing community drawn irresistibly to the sea every morning. The film follows the lives and loves of these charming, witty and lively individuals over a lengthy period as they defy wind, weather and time itself. The camera never leaves the beach, which appears to be their natural habitat. It becomes the setting for a ritual encounter with the sea, whose rhythms shape the film.
