Pelle erobrerenPelle, der Eroberer / Pelle the Conquerer

Retrospective, Denmark 1987, 143 Min.

In the late nineteenth century, eight-year-old Pelle and his father Lasse arrive in Denmark by ship from Sweden to seek their fortune. The brutal trade in immigrant labour begins the moment they disembark. Father and son end up on a farm on the island of Bornholm, where people are treated like animals. Though Lasse initially clings to his dreams of a better life, resignation eventually takes hold. Young Pelle sets out in search of freedom and solidarity. This epic production is based on the Danish literary masterpiece of the same name by Martin Andersen Nexø. Bille August’s breakthrough film was released in all the Nordic countries simultaneously at Christmas 1987 and played to capacity audiences for months. The leading actors and the film received numerous awards, including the Golden Palm at Cannes and the Academy Award for Best Foreign-language Film. “Pelle the Conqueror” is already a classic of Scandinavian cinema. His touching drama “A Song for Martin” was screened at the 2001 Nordic Film Days Lübeck.
