Små kjempers øy

14-year-old Sidre wears a baseball cap with the word FUCK emblazoned on it. So it seems only logical that one of his teachers should see fit to educate him and his pals in the use of “positive language”, teaching them such unusual expressions as “friendly”, “nice”, “naturally” and “kind”. Sidre is one of a group of “difficult” children spending six months on the island of Lindøy, off the coast of Stavanger, where there has been a young offenders’ institution for more than a hundred years. Jørgen Tjemsland is the first director ever to have been given permission to film there. Apart from Sidre, the film also follows three other behaviourally disturbed youths aged between 10 and 15, showing them in their daily life with their carers and foster families. What we see is a group of vulnerable young people oscillating between stubbornness and a wish to belong – and an education concept based on rewards rather than punishment.
