Competition Documentaries, Denmark 2006, 80 Min., English subtitles
“We need a film about this big unknown expanse whose fate is so inextricably linked with Denmark,” is how director Anne Wivel describes what led to her hard-hitting documentary about Greenland. She has created a richly facetted description of the Greenland soul that touches on old wounds yet also looks optimistically towards the future. Wivel’s docu-collage combines shots of the merciless and breathtakingly beautiful landscape with vintage footage of Inuit life. Locals tell their personal stories: an elderly woman recalls her forced resettlement from Thule as a child when the military base was built there; a young woman describes the struggle of today’s youth to overcome the economic dependence of their parents’ generation. In between, we see parliamentary debates in which Greenland’s politicians call for independence. If you want to know how the people of Greenland think and feel, don’t miss this film.
