Vildanden

This 1884 drama about the web of deceit woven by a bourgeois family is one of Ibsen’s most frequently filmed plays. It tells of the Ekdals, whose superficially peaceful life is shattered when the family skeletons come out of the cupboard. Hjalmar Ekdal, the father, considers himself a brilliant inventor, but will never actually invent anything. He is supported financially by old Werle, who was once the lover of Hjalmar’s wife Gina and might even be the real father of 14-year-old Hedvig Ekdal. Tancred Ibsen stayed very close to the original text in adapting his grandfather’s bourgeois drama for cinema. Enthusiastically embraced by Ibsen fans at the time, this film is still widely regarded as a prime example of a faithful literary adaptation.
