When Knut Pedersen, 28, takes the train to Larvik to take up his first teaching post at the local secondary school in the sixties, what grabs his attention on the journey is the red skirt worn by one of the passengers. Later, he will gaze no less adoringly at the Red Flag, for teacher Pedersen is in love with the Revolution. At first, he seems to settle down into middle-class marital bliss, but a rebellious student soon wins him over to the ideals of the Marxist-Leninist Workers Party (AKP). And when he then meets fellow revolutionary Nina, a doctor, he falls head over heels for his attractive comrade. Even after she has ended her relationship with him, Pedersen remains true to his love and his dream of the Revolution. Hans Petter Moland’s humorous and sensitive adaptation of the novel brings out the unwittingly comical aspects of the class struggle while at the same time portraying the tragic and self-destructive traits of a generation in thrall to Mao and rock 'n' roll.
