Baltasar Kormákur’s first English-language film is like the Coen brothers meet David Lynch on Iceland. Forest Whitaker (of Jim Jarmusch’s “Ghost Dog” fame) plays an insurance agent working on an accident claim in an unpleasant small town. The victim, burned in the car, has been identified as the brother of Isold, who now stands to gain a million dollar payout. That is, unless curmudgeonly insurance agent Holt can come up with anything against Isold and her husband Fred. The dark machinations of all concerned are echoed in the gloomy scenery that Kormákur filmed on location in Iceland and Nova Scotia. This film in the “noir” tradition shows an ice-cold America where nobody can be trusted. It is a tense thriller inspired by a real-life experience: when the set of his last film “The Sea” was gutted by fire, the director soon found out just how stubborn and unrelenting insurance agencies can be.
