Romeo and Juliet in the Copenhagen suburb of Brøndby: Danish Mie and Palestinian Shadi are in love, but their happiness is suddenly overshadowed by a brutal attack on Mie’s brother. Per is lying in a coma and the police have no leads. The media tout the incident as yet another example of crimes committed by immigrants in this socially deprived area. Fearing for her older brother, Mie seeks solace with her boyfriend Shadi. But Shadi finds it hard to comfort her, because he has reason to suspect that his own brother might have been behind the attack on Per. In her new film Annette K. Olesen (“Minor Mishaps”, “In Your Hands”) grasps the nettle of the cultural divide between Danes and Muslim immigrants – a highly sensitive issue in the very country that unleashed the “cartoon row”. Olesen’s cast of young non-professionals and her direct approach lend this film a real sense of authenticity, proving once more that she is a director with her finger on the pulse of our times.
