Scandinavian film series 2016 on NDR – Last year’s Nordic Film Days Lübeck winner in a TV premiere

Lübeck, Nov. 1, 2016. In honour of the 58th Nordic Film Days Lübeck, Norddeutsche Rundfunk broadcaster (NDR), for many years a media partner of the NFL, will present a "Scandinavian film series" in November and December 2016, comprising 11 films from Denmark, Sweden and Norway.  The highlight of the programme is the TV premiere on November 7, 2016 of “Returning Home”. The feature film debut of young Norwegian director Henrik Martin Dahlsbakken won last year’s NDR Film Prize, which carries an endowment of 12,500 euros, the highest of the festival prizes. The jury honoured “a film made by an ambitious and highly talented young filmmaker that combines brilliant images of nature and terrific acting to address an important contemporary issue”, according to their statement.

Fans of hits such as “Waterloo”, “Dancing Queen” and “Fernando” should be sure not to miss the Swedish-Australian production “ABBA – The Movie” on Nov. 21. Director Lasse Hallström shot the film in 1977 during the Australian tour of the world's most beloved Swedish pop group, which was at the pinnacle of its popularity.

The Scandinavian film series will launch on November 5, 2106 with thrillers from northern Europe as part of the “Scandinavian Crime Night”. “Still Waters” features single-mother and detective Maria Wern tracking down a suspect murdering woman on Gotland; and in the film version of Håkan Nesser’s “Swallow, Cat, Rose, Death”, detective Münster is on the small screen investigating a literary murderer.  The third film on crime night is the Swedish action-thriller “Exit”, with international star Mads Mikkelsen in the role of Thomas Skepphult, an unscrupulous manager who would sell his own grandmother, but also a sensitive father and husband. The acting talents of his older brother Lars Mikkelsen will be on display during the film series on Sunday, November 13, in the frighteningly beautiful “When Animals Dream”.

"The White Lioness”, based on the novel by Henning Mankell can be seen on Sunday of crime weekend. Detective Wallander’s journey takes him to South Africa – one of Mankell’s favourite settings – as he tracks a large-scale political conspiracy. The spectacular cast includes Rolf Låssgard in the lead.

The NDR series also includes an early work by Danish director Susanne Bier, who won an Oscar in 2011 for "In a Better World". In the thriller “Sekten” (Credo), Sofie Gråbøl of “The Killing” fame is Mona, who is looking forward to her upcoming wedding; for fun, she gets her fortune told, but it's not good news. Shortly thereafter, Mona’s best friend Anne’s psychiatrist starts acting strangely, embroiling the two women in a dangerous game of psycho-terror, manipulation and fanaticism, from which escape seems nearly impossible.

The NDR Scandinavian film series will be rounded off with three episodes of “Beck" -  You can see the maverick, successful detective of the Stockholm police at work on three Sundays, with the episodes “Kuriere des Todes“, “Todesfalle” and “Todesengel”.
