Lübeck, Oct. 30, 2015. The documentary films screening at the 57th Nordic Film Days do the genre proud with their portrayals of topical and complex issues as they examine particular personal destinies and political processes. The topic of refugees is currently everywhere in the news and I AM DUBLIN does justice to the subject with its coverage of the hardships and absurdities of the Dublin Process, which has long since outlived its applicability. NICE PEOPLE, directed by Sweden’s Anders Helgeson and Karin af Klintberg, on the other hand, provides an inspiring example of cultural integration. Mr. Helgeson will be on hand in Lübeck to discuss the film.
The Baltic States’ battle for independence is the subject of Those Who Dare – On Solidarity of Small Nations. Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson, who was the Icelandic foreign minister during the events depicted in the documentary, will be a special guest in Lübeck and available for a Q&A. It was he who gave a voice to the grass roots movement on the streets of Vilnius and the international political stage, ensuring that Iceland was the first country to recognize Lithuania and Baltic independence, providing an example for other countries to follow.
The imponderables of the atomic energy industry are addressed in the Finnish film RETURN OF THE ATOM and the Latvian THE INVISIBLE CITY, which will be introduced by director Viestur Kairish. Both THE NEWS ROOM – OFF THE RECORD and Finland’s BECOMING ME, which will be accompanied in Lübeck by director Mina Laamo, look at the effects of the digital revolution on the print media and communications.
The broad spectrum of subject matter in this year’s NFL documentary programme ranges from global issues, such as in BIKES VS CARS – a must-see for cycling advocates – and MOTHER’S WISH, which follows mothers on several continents and even in deep space, to very personal approaches to the subject matter and portraits of artists and other significant figures in contemporary history. Danish director Christian Braad Thomsen will be in Lübeck to introduce his film Fassbinder –To Love without Demands. A companion and friend of the renowned German filmmaker, his film is a very personal look at a complex man. Director Giedre Zickyte will once again be a guest in Lübeck to present her film MASTER AND TATYANA about legendary photographer Vitus Luckus, a heavyweight of the 1960s Soviet art scene.
The documentary programme is rounded out with two special presentations in Lübeck churches. Composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who recently won the Golden Globe for best film music for "The Theory of Everything", will be a guest in Lübeck to present his directorial debut END OF SUMMER, screening on Nov. 7, 2015 at 6:30 pm in the St. Katharinen museum church. Shot on special black-and-white film stock and underlaid with a musical tapestry, the result is a hypnotic journey through the waning arctic summer at the edge of the world. The film will be looped as a video installation in St. Katharinen every day from Nov. 5 – 7 between 6:30 and 9:00 pm. Free admittance. On Nov. 7, 2015 at 7:00 pm in the seven seas chapel of Lübeck’s St. Jakobi seamen’s church, there will be a screening of IMPACT, the absorbing documentary about a mysterious shipwreck and the dramatic rescue operation that followed. Director Ágústa Einarsdóttir will be on hand for Q&A.
