Inhalt/ Summary

„Tag und Nacht denke ich an meine Kühe. Ohne sie würde ich es einfach nicht schaffen, sagt der 70-jährige Rune Jansson, Rentner, Junggeselle und einziger Bewohner der Insel Bergö im Osten der finnischen Åland Inseln. Dort lebt er mit seinen Kühen, Hühnern und Katzen ein zufriedenes Leben im Einklang mit der Natur - und vor allem gegen die Regeln der EU: Rune weigert sich, seinen Kühen Ohrmarken anzulegen oder seinen Stall nach EU-Richtlinien umzugestalten. Die Molkerei auf dem Festland darf seine Milch deshalb nicht abnehmen. So gießt Rune Jahr für Jahr Tausende Liter Milch einfach weg, mit seinem Hof macht er dabei Verlust. Er glaubt, dass Kühe Seelen haben und viel mehr verstehen, als wir Menschen glauben. Per-Ove Högnäs ist ein liebenswerter Film über einen Außenseiter unserer Gesellschaft gelungen, der unermüdlich für seinen Lebensstil kämpft. Gleichzeitig porträtiert er eine Kultur, die zum Untergang verdammt ist. Und nicht zuletzt ist „Die glückliche Kuh" ein berührendes Plädoyer für die Tierliebe. Auf dem Kurz- und Dokumentarfilmfestival auf Åland wurde er als bester Film ausgezeichnet."

I think of my cattle day and night. I just wouldn't manage without them." Says 70-year-old Rune Jansson, a single pensioner who is the sole inhabitant of Bergö island in the east of the Finnish Åland Isles. He lives there contentedly with his cattle, hens and cats, in harmony with nature - but hardly in harmony with EU regulations. Rune refuses to earmark his cattle or bring his cowshed up to EU standards. Because of this, the dairy on the mainland is not allowed to buy his milk, and so Rune pours thousands of litres of milk away every year, and his farm makes a loss. He believes that cattle have souls and that they understand far more than people think they do. Per-Ove Högnäs has made a charming film about an outsider fighting to maintain his way of life. At the same time, the film also portrays a culture doomed to die. Last, but not least, "Happy Cow" is a touching plea for kindness to animals. Winner of the Best Film award at the Åland short and documentary film festival."

Per-Ove Högnäs wurde 1955 in Mariehamn auf den Åland-Inseln geboren. Er ist studierter Ethnologe und Dokumentarfilmregisseur. Für das Finnische und das Schwedische Fernsehen hat er Dokumentationen über das Leben auf der Inselgruppe gedreht.

Per-Ove Högnäs was born in 1955 in Mariehamn on the Åland Islands. He studied Ethnology and Documentary Filmmaking. He has made documentations of life on the islands for Finnish and Swedish Television.
