Lars von Triers neuer Film war die diesjährige Sensation auf dem Filmfestival in Cannes: Internationale Stars spielen ein Melodram zwischen Kreidestrichen auf einem Studioboden, die Handlungsorte symbolisieren. Unterschiedlich starke Scheinwerfer stehen für Sonnenauf- und -untergang. Stilisierte Kinokunst, die fasziniert: Grace (Nicole Kidman) landet auf der Flucht vor Gangstern in dem abgelegenen Städtchen Dogville in den Rocky Mountains. Seine Bewohner sind bereit, sie zu verstecken, wenn Grace im Gegenzug für sie arbeitet. Noch weiß keiner, dass Grace ein schreckliches Geheimnis hütet. Der dänische Regie-Star präsentiert eine verblüffende Mischung aus absurdem Theater und klassischer Erzählkunst, die ihre Spannung bis zur letzten Minute des dreistündigen Film-Experimentes nicht verliert. Die apokalyptische Sichtweise einer durch Gier und Selbstgerechtigkeit verdorbenen Gesellschaft trug von Trier übrigens den Vorwurf des Anti-Amerikanismus ein, dennoch sind sich Kritiker einig: „Er gibt dem Publikum die Phantasie zurück und bestätigt seine Position als einer der visionärsten und mutigsten Filmemacher unserer Zeit! Regisseur Lars von Trier, geboren 1956, machte 1983 seinen Abschluss an der Dänischen Filmhochschule und gilt als einer der gefeiertsten und umstrittensten Regisseure der Gegenwart. Seinen Ruhm begründete er mit seiner Europa-Trilogie „The Element of Crime (1984), „Epidemic" (1987) und „Europa" (1991). Der endgültige Durchbruch gelang ihm mit der Fernsehserie „The Kingdom" (1994). 1991 gründete er zusammen mit Peter Aalbæck Jensen die Produktionsfirma Zentropa Entertainments. 1995 spielte Lars von Trier die zentrale Rolle bei der Entwicklung des Dogme 95 Manifests, das Filmemacher weltweit beeinflusst hat. Sein eigener Beitrag zu Dogma war der Film „Idioten" (1998), der mit „Breaking the Waves" (1996) und „Dancer in the Dark" (2000), dem Gewinner der Goldenen Palme in Cannes, die Golden-Heart Trilogie bildet. Bei dem Dokumentarfilm „The Five Obstructions" (2003) führte er zusammen mit Jørgen Leth Regie. „Dogville" (2003) ist sein 9. Spielfilm und der erste Film seiner neuesten Trilogie „USA - Land of Opportunities"."

Director Lars von Trier was born in 1956 in Denmark and graduated from the National Film School of Denmark in 1983. One of the most controversial and celebrated filmmakers of his era, he gained an international reputation with his Europa Trilogy, which consisted of The Element of Crime" (1984), "Epidemic" (1987) and "Europa" (1991). His major breakthrough with the audience came with the television production "The Kingdom" (1994). In 1991, Lars von Trier co-founded Zentropa Entertainments with Peter Aalbæk Jensen and in 1995 he played a central role in the development of the Dogme 95 Manifesto which has inspired filmmakers worldwide. His Golden-Heart Trilogy consisted of the films "Breaking the Waves" (1996), "The Idiots" (1998) and "Dancer in the Dark" (2000), which was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Festival de Cannes in 2000. He co-directed "The Five Obstructions" (2003) - also appearing in the Festival this year "Dogville" (2003) is his ninth feature film and the first film of his newest trilogy entitled "USA - Land of Opportunities"."
