Velnio nuotaka

Velnio nuotakaThe Devil's Bride

Retrospective, Lithuania 1973, 78 Min., lith. OV, engl. st

When devil Pinčiukas is cast out from heaven and hell, and ends up at the Baltaragis mill, he and the miller make a pact. Pinčiukas will help Baltaragis win the beautiful Marcelė as his wife and, in return, the devil gets to marry the lovely daughter they will have. And indeed, Jurga grows up to be as comely as her mother, who died young. But the young woman is in love with the dapper Girdvainis and all of Pinčiukas’ attempts to separate the lovers are in vain. Regretting the deal he made, Baltaragis tries to interest the devil in marrying the miller’s less-than-lovely sister, Uršulė. But Pinčiukas has bigger problems. The villagers have recognised his satanic nature and are out to kill him. Based on a novel by Kazys Boruta that was also adapted for the stage and as a ballet, the film, with music by jazz and film composer Viačeslavas Ganelinas, was Lithuania’s first and most successful pop musical, a “wild, devilish, love saga orgy dressed as a rock opera” (GoEast, 2018).
