It is the late nineteenth century. Lisa, eldest daughter of an old and well-respected rural family, wants to leave the farm and go to school. Her strict father is against these plans, but her mother Anna supports her. Anna is pregnant again; this time, they’re planning on a boy. Complications arise during the birth, but superstition prevents the family from calling the doctor. In this extreme familial situation, the camera never lets the young girl out of its sight. Lisa questions her plans for the future, her religious beliefs, and her attraction to a boy from the neighbouring farm. The world she knows so well appears in a different light. One look at Lisa’s face is enough to feel her inner turmoil. A series of images charged with religious connotations are visual representations of her fears, fantasies, and visions. The movie may take place 150 years ago, but it deals with the questions of our day – gender, feminism, and rigid religious fervour.
