It's the 1950s and there is a great shortage of nurses in Denmark. The Fredenslund hospital launches a controversial experiment and begins admitting men into the nursing programme for the first time. The young war veteran Erik persuades the nursing matron to give him one of the spaces, and so he joins five other male colleagues in the formerly women-only nurses' home. On the very first day, he meets Anna, a daughter of the upper classes. But not everyone is happy about the male nurse experiment. The chief physician and the senior nurse make life difficult for the young students. But Erik, Anna, and the other students want to make a difference and stand up to the rigid rules, prejudices, and old conventions. Despite the heavy schedules, the emotions of the students run high when they hold secret parties in the dormitories on their free nights.
