Lars and Kirsten Eckert lead a happy life together as a family in Hamburg until Lars is involved in a tragic car accident that takes the life of his 11-year-old daughter. Chief Detective Johannes Fischer takes on the investigation of the fatal accident over the objection of his superiors, since he knows the family personally. While Lars states that he was distracted by some sort of flash of light, his wife Kirsten and the police doubt anyone else was involved in the accident. The next day, Johannes Fischer is called to another crime scene; a young woman has been found shot dead on a park bench. The investigation leads the police to a Hamburg banker who was having a secret love affair with the victim. Detective Fischer discovers a fatal nexus of relationships that portentously brings people together who initially had nothing to do with one another.
