Who comes up with the idea of writing “Nine Unfinished Symphonies”? Or “1001 Sonatas for Violin and Piano” – each about a minute long, but when combined one of the longest works ever? The Belgian postmodern composer Boudewijn Buckinx (b. 1945) deals with music history in a playful way. His work seems familiar, yet always confounds anew. “Daisies on a meadow” is how he once described his sonatas, which take the lead role in this film – alongside the Spanish sun and Belgian rain. With Buckinx, you always have to be prepared for surprises. “Why is my music so simple? Why is my music so complex?” – With a wink, he repeatedly gives new answers to these questions, thus giving an insight into his artistic position.
