After a plane crash, a young boy survives on a deserted island. There he meets a voracious giant who stalks him relentlessly, and a pint-sized feathered friend who becomes his loyal companion. When the boy finds a map showing the location of a harbour, as well as a motorcycle, he starts to work his way towards the coast, followed by the giant. The journey takes him through magical landscapes and a fabulous world of animals … Gints Zilbalodis worked on his first feature for three-and-a-half years. In addition to writing, directing, and doing all the animation himself, he also composed the music and took on editing, sound, and production duties. The result is a surreal “hero’s journey” full of fantastic imagery, that is successful despite the absence of any spoken words. By radically reducing the tale to an elemental visual level, Zilbalodis has produced in “Away” an archetype of the adventure story.
