Competition Documentaries, Norway 2018, 75 Min., norw. OV, engl. st
Mannskoret is a men’s choir in Oslo. The 25 members meet every Tuesday to sing together. Singing satisfies them and makes them happy; the choir is like a second family for them. The tunes they choose are send-ups of the “lusty guy” stereotype (“I’m an asshole”) or tackle embarrassing male malaise (“Why Does it Hurt When I Pee?”). In 2016, they were offered the spot as the opening act for heavy metal band Black Sabbath at Norway’s “Tons of Rock” festival. Their normal venues are street festivals; there, they’d be singing for an audience of 10,000. But during rehearsals, the unthinkable occurs. Their conductor is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Will he live to be part of the concert? … What begins as a down-home rockumentary quickly takes on aspects of a sensitive and moving portrait of a group of men who challenge a lot of the firm opinions about “real guys”.
